Taking InitiativeEndowment Building @ SJR!SJR's YiP committee organized a ‘colour day’ to help add to our endowment fund at The Winnipeg Foundation. We raised $563 to go towards our endowment fund! Extra Rewarding!During the YiP year, students keep busy! As a great example, check out the other projects taken on by Kelvin YiPpers this year in addition to their grantmaking: October 2010: Thanksgiving fundraiser for Siloam Mission - Staff and students helped purchase over 50 meals; a co-chair and staff advisor were guests on Siloam Mission’s radiothon. November 2010 (for National Philanthropy Day) - YiPpers scoured the halls collecting tampons and sanitary items to donate to Sage House.
November – December 2010: “Kool Clothes for Cold Kids” - Through this clothing drive for Mulvey School we were able to purchase over 30 pairs of good quality warm mittens December 2010 - Some members collected donations at Safeway for the Christmas Cheerboard, others volunteered sorting coats for Koats for Kids.
December 2010: Awareness campaign in support of MADD - Teachers showed a video to their classes, and we asked staff and students to sign a commitment form to not drink and drive during the holiday, as well as display a red ribbon on either their car, classroom door, or backpack. Glenlawn 4 AgapeIn 2010-2011 the Glenlawn Collegiate YiP committee decided to try to help out in the community by fundraising for Agape Table. They wanted to do additional work separate from the standard Youth in Philanthropy program. As a group, they decided to help those living in poverty in Winnipeg based on one of their areas of focus: strongly believing that everyone deserves the right to a meal.

...everyone deserves the right to a meal. After contacting Agape Table, they learned that a holiday meal at Agape would cost $1,000 to sponsor. As a group, they decided to fund a holiday meal so the plan became to raise more than $1,000 over the course of the year through various fundraising events. After reaching their goal, they were excited to serve a special meal at Agape Table over the 2010 May long weekend on a special day Agape Table has dubbed “Lion Day” in honor of the Glenlawn YiP committee’s hard work. Working 2getherThe idea of multi-school events was a popular one this year. In early March 2010, YiP schools came together, from the North End to the Sound End of Winnipeg for the first-ever YiP battle of the bands, HELP yOUTh. Five bands competed and almost $1,000 was raised for youth in need.

Garden City and Vincent Massey YiP committees also joined efforts to help raise money for Sage House. Through bake sales and other creative fundraising activities, the two schools raised over $300 to help purchase hygiene products and snacks for Sage House clients.
