About The Winnipeg Foundation

Who we are

The Winnipeg Foundation is a community foundation. That means it’s a charitable organization with two main purposes: to receive donations from the general public and to make grants that support local charities. The Winnipeg Foundation was established in 1921 and was the first organization of its kind in Canada.

What we do

All donations made to The Winnipeg Foundation are invested permanently and never spent. Instead, those investments earn interest and that interest is used to make grants to charities. Over our long history, the Foundation has received thousands of donations — big and small — from donors of all walks of life. All of our donors have shared the same wish to make Winnipeg a better place. Because all donations to the Foundation are invested together, even small gifts can have big impact. And, over time, that impact grows.

History

...it is not the size of the gift, but the idea of giving, that is important.

In 1921, William Forbes Alloway (above), a prominent banker in Western Canada, established The Winnipeg Foundation with a cheque for $100,000. The next gift to the Foundation was an anonymous donation made in 1924. That anonymous gift was three five-dollar coins. Even though this second donation was much smaller than the first, it has come to symbolize the spirit of the Foundation: it is not the size of the gift, but the idea of giving, that is important.
