All About YIP

YiP Today

The Winnipeg Foundation’s Youth in Philanthropy program is designed to introduce motivated youth, like you, to philanthropy and local community development. The program will give you a hands-on experience working as a team and with local charitable organizations to help your Winnipeg flourish. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience.

The program begins in September each year, when your school gets together a crew of students to form a YiP committee. The Winnipeg Foundation reserves $5,000 for each committee to distribute to charities of its choice. This is a unique opportunity for each committee.

First, you’ll hash out your areas of interest:

With input from each committee member, your group decides which charities will receive grants, how much money each will receive, and how that money will be spent — with no more than $1,000 going to any one charity. Figuring out where your committee’s funds will make the most difference isn’t easy: it takes some good detective work while you are looking for the ultimate granting combination.

After you’ve conducted your site visits, you will then submit your grant recommendations to the Board of The Winnipeg Foundation for final approval. In May, the program winds up with an evening of celebration for all YiP participants, staff advisors and grant recipients. Check out some of the vids made for this event last year below. Through YiP you’ll gain skills that will last a lifetime and learn about some amazing people and organizations doing powerful work to make our community better.
