All About YIP

YiP at Home and Around the World

Youth in Philanthropy is a growing movement that engages young people in the charitable sector by empowering them as community leaders and decision-makers.

Today there are YiP committees throughout Canada and the United States, as well as Australia, Brazil, England, Mexico, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Poland and Slovakia. YiP is usually a project of a community foundation, but each program is run a little differently.

In Canada, there are approximately 60 YiP groups, and there are several other programs in Manitoba. The way we run the program in Winnipeg is unique in Canada. Most foundations operate YiP as a single committee, made up of youth from across the community. Usually, these committees consider grant applications made by charities in their region, and many are limited to funding only youth-based projects. Also, many committees are responsible for fundraising a portion, or even all, of the money they distribute as grants.

At The Winnipeg Foundation, we’ve chosen a school-based program. That means several hundred students are able to participate each year. Our YiPpers make grants based on their committee’s agreed-upon areas of focus, rather than by responding to applications. And, although fundraising is an important part of our program, it is not required.

Many other community foundations in Manitoba also operate YiP programs through their schools, with the support of the Thomas Sill Foundation. Other youth grantmaking programs are available in Manitoba through the United Way of Winnipeg.
